Field Notes 004.
 
I hosted an adoption event for the lovely mushrooms and mushlings and fruit salad friends a few nights ago, and it was a rousing success! Perhaps a bit too successful. One of the adopters discovered that you can pop the cap of a Mushroom Shoot. When I first saw them do so, I was terrified they had hurt the little fellow, but we all quickly realized that the shoot was perfectly fine. In fact, I dare say they loved it! They begged their new friend to do it again and again. According to their adopter, it was a remarkable benefit for their ADHD as well! I will admit that I have since brought home my own little mycelium baby, and they have made it much easier to focus on my audio recordings. They insist I write that their name is Bubbles, and they are blue, and their favorite word is blue bubbles. They do not listen when I say that is two words, but as anyone who has met a mycelium shoot can confirm, they are not the brightest of species. 
 
Since the adoption event I have had over half a dozen requests for baby mycelium. And not just the Amanita muscaria species that Mina and I initially planned to adopt out. Whereas before it was a rare treat for me to find a blue mycelium, now I am receiving requests for all sorts of colors and combinations! Mina and I had a puzzle over this, before we came up with a brilliant solution - simply ask the mother magic mycelium that spreads under the Candy Cap Woods whether there was any way to create different colored shoots. And lo-and-behold, there is! The mother mycelium was more than happy to create a whole field of multicolored mushroom shoots for us to bring to loving families. The colors were so vibrant the field looked like a stained glass mosaic. It was incredible, and all that the mother mycelium asked for in return was for us to provide rotting flowers in the colors of the mushrooms we requested. Mina laughed at this request, as she already was doing so! It was simply the mycelium's sideways stamp of approval, according to Mina. I could not be happier with the outcome. I've taken requests (and flowers!) from potential adopters to bring to Mina. She'll make sure the mother mycelium does not overextend herself and things remain in balance, as all good witches should. I cannot wait to see the brilliant bouquets of color our friends from beyond the wood's wall will bring!
